Completed Projects
Evangelism Trip Tonj and Rumbek, Sudan
In March, 2003 Bishop Taban, and his 7 person evangelism team traveled to Tonj and Rumbek, Sudan. The team left Yei, Sudan on March 11 and returned on March 19.
Tonj
The team spent 3 days in Tonj. The worship of bulls is practiced heavily in the Tonj area, and witchcraft is having a detrimental effect on the people. During this trip our projector was broken, but we used a large television to show the Jesus Film in the Dinka language. The Jesus Film was shown nightly, and 4,950 people were born again as new believers in Jesus. This number included 4,200 soldiers. The Episcopal Church of Sudan will be responsible for follow-up of these new believers. About 40% of the new believers had been animists and 5% had been Muslims. The team was persecuted initially in Tonj, but by the end of the 3 days the people who persecuted them were ashamed of their actions.
Finally, a cobra was killed in the evangelists’ bedroom. In summary, even though the enemy actively opposed the preaching of the gospel many people were saved.
Rumbek
In Rumbek the team trained 300 participants in evangelism. After the training the participants spent one day in person to person evangelism. During the Rumbek trip 3,082 people were born again as new believers in Jesus. The people became new believers through Jesus Film shows in the Dinka language and through person to person evangelism. Of the people who were saved 60% had been animists and 15% had been Muslims. In Rumbek one new Presbyterian Church will be planted. We are praying for $1,300 to buy the land for the church inside the city of Rumbek. The pastor of the new church will be Evangelist Moses Ater. Pastor Ater was raised in Rumbek and has undergone training for two years in Yei. While the team was in the Rumbek open market, they prayed for a deaf man, and he was able to hear again. This miracle surprised the crowd and encouraged the team.
