Evangelism Trip – Rokon, Sudan
In April, 2003 Bishop Taban and his 15 person evangelism team traveled 9 hours to Rokon, Sudan. The team left Yei, Sudan on Saturday, April 5 and returned on Saturday, April 12. The team immediately showed the JESUS Film when they reached Rokon on Saturday night, April 5, and 750 people were born again. On Sunday morning, Bishop Taban led a service under a tree for some of the newly born again from 8 am till 11 am. On Sunday night at the JESUS Film show in a smaller community 210 people were born again. During this evangelism trip a total of 6,020 people were born again as new believers in Jesus. The JESUS Film was shown in the Arabic language with some translation into Bari. Approximately 50% of the new believers had been animists, and 20% had been Muslims.
The evangelist’s presentation of the gospel was confirmed by 13 people who were healed of various illnesses. Two new Presbyterian churches will be planted in Rokon for some of the new believers. A large mixture of Bari speaking tribes were reached during this trip including Bari, Lokoya, Lulubo, Pojulu, Kakwa, Kuku and Mudari. Also, Rokon has many displaced people from other tribes who don’t speak Bari, so Arabic is the most commonly understood language across all these tribes.
Regarding follow-up, some of the new believers were handed over to the Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS), and some will join the two new Presbyterian churches. Two evangelists will be sent from Yei to plant these two new churches. The evangelism team distributed 100 Bibles in the Bari language and 50 Bibles in the Arabic language to born again believers who could read.
