Evangelism Trip Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
In June, 2004 Congolese Evangelist Ayume Michael and Pastor Samuel Amule and their 10 person evangelism team traveled 2 1/2 days south to Bunia, DRC. The team left Yei, Sudan on June 4 and returned on July 5.
It is estimated that 50,000 people were killed in and around Bunia from 1999-2003. However, during this trip the team reported that the Bunia area was calm with no fighting. The team was welcomed in Bunia as men sent by God.
The JESUS Film was shown in the Lingala language. A total of 19,600 people indicated decisions for Christ. The population of Bunia is about 400,000. Approximately 50% of the new believers had been animists, 10% had been followers of black magic, and 1% had been Muslims. The Hema, Lendu and many smaller tribes were reached during this trip.
Three new churches were planted in Bunia. Regarding follow-up, the new believers were handed over to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Congo and the three new churches. The evangelism team distributed 500 bibles in the Lingala language to born again believers who could read.
Listed below are two testimonies from this trip.
- Many of the Hema and Lendu militia were saved. Some confessed to using black magic charms to repel bullets. They confessed to becoming rich in black magic by offering the people that they had killed as sacrifices to their demon gods. They repented of their evil practices and burned their magical charms.
- Over 100 people said that they were instantly healed of various physical ailments by just following the closing prayer at the end of the film. This prayer is the last part of the film and it is intended to lead viewers to accept Christ. They walked forward after the film ended to testify that each of them had been miraculously healed after they accepted Christ.
